James Ryan is a screenwriter and director based in Washington, DC. He cut his teeth on VHS and VCR-to-VCR editing, making b-horror movies with his friends. While working as an editor for tv, he wrote and directed his first feature "Life as We Know It (2017)." His sophomore film "The Girl in the Woods" won Best Indie Film at the 2025 Arizona International Film Festival.

His screenplay "The Fried Liver" was called "exceptional... heartfelt... off the charts entertaining" and "smartly written" by the ISA.


James is a 2026 Emerging Screenwriters Semi-finalist; 2019 BlueCat Screenplay Semi-finalist; 2019 Page Awards Quarter-finalist; 2019 48 Hour Film International Script Competition Top 15; 2018 ScreenCraft Comedy Semi-finalist; 2018 Southern California Screenplay Semi-finalist; 2018 Austin Film Festival Second-rounder; 2018, 2016 and 2014 Washington, DC 48 Hour Film Festival winner (Best Film, Best Writing, Best Directing) as well as 2017 Jameson Irish Whiskey International Short Film Competition Top 20 and 2016 Four Points International Film Competition Top 10.

His work has been seen on CBS, and on silver screens across the country including Hollywood at the famed TCL Chinese Theater.

James' second feature film, The Girl in the Woods, is Available Now on Amazon Prime Video, and most major streaming platforms.
